New centre to help entrepreneurs

A new complex developed to help nurture enterprise has opened in a deprived area of Leeds.

The £2.4m Hillside centre has taken over the former Hillside Primary School building on Beeston Road in Beeston.

It will house 17 local firms, offering flexible terms and short-term leases to encourage first-time businesses.

Additional services available on site include conference facilities and free business advice. The LS11 FM community radio station has also moved in.

Hillside Primary School closed in 2006 and the grade II-listed building had been boarded up until it was bought by not-for-profit organisation Tiger 11 last year.

Many of the school's original Victorian features have been preserved.

Tiger 11 director Jeremy Morton, who lives in Beeston, said: "We want to increase enterprise and growth by providing quality facilities for local people in Beeston and Holbeck to develop their skills and set up businesses.

"It's also a great opportunity for businesses from across the city and beyond to use the fantastic services and conference amenities on offer at a competitive rate, with the bonus that the money they spend at Hillside will be working to help a deprived community."
